Appointed as a trustee in July 2006.
John is the first visually impaired judge to sit in the high courts in the United Kingdom. After leaving university and completing a postgraduate certificate in secondary education, John worked as an Administrator / Instructor at Bulu Centre for the Blind in Cameroon. He then returned to Scotland and taught English in a large comprehensive school in Motherwell. During the late 1970s he spoke on behalf of Sightsavers at a number of high profile events.
He qualified as a solicitor in 1985 and was the managing partner in a law firm for 15 years. He became a part time judge in 2000, sitting in the Crown Court. He has now been appointed full time Circuit Judge with effect from November 2007. John also advises on training for disabled people.
